Speed Racer on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System came out in 1994, published by Accolade. It was one of those mid-90s licensed games that tried to capture the look and feel of the cartoon, and it landed right in the thick of the SNES's library, where arcade-style racers were pretty common. It didn't try to be a sim; it was all about fast, frantic action.
You control Speed Racer's Mach 5, racing through a series of tracks against aggressive opponents. The main goal is to win each race, but you spend most of your time avoiding obstacles and using the car's special weapons, like homing missiles and oil slicks, to take out rival drivers. The handling is intentionally loose, making drifts long and sometimes unpredictable, which keeps you constantly correcting. Races are short but intense, and the computer opponents cheat relentlessly, so finishing first requires sharp reflexes and a bit of memorization. It feels like you're fighting the track as much as the other cars.
