Game Overview

Speed Racer: The Videogame came out on the Nintendo DS in 2008, developed by Sidhe Interactive. It was part of that wave of movie tie-in games on the DS, aiming to capture the high-speed, colorful style of the film. The platform was full of racers, but this one tried to stand out with its direct connection to the property and its attempt to translate that visual energy onto the small screen.

You control Speed Racer in his Mach 5, racing through a series of winding, gravity-defying tracks. The main objective is straightforward: win the Grand Prix by finishing first in every event. The game employs a few signature mechanics, like using the touch screen to activate the car's special gadgets, such as saws to cut through obstacles or jump jacks to leap over gaps. You also build up a boost meter by performing risky maneuvers like drafting or drifting close to walls. The pacing is relentless, and the AI can be brutally aggressive, often shoving you into hazards if you give them an opening. It feels like a constant, chaotic scramble for position where one small mistake can cost you the entire race.
