Game Overview

Spider-Man: Battle for New York came out on the Nintendo DS in 2006, published by Activision. It was part of that wave of handheld tie-ins to bigger console games, trying to capture some of that open-world superhero energy on a smaller screen. The DS was still pretty new then, and this was one of those early attempts to make a decent action game with dual screens and a stylus.

You control either Spider-Man or Green Goblin, each with their own campaign. As Spider-Man, you swing through the city, beat up thugs, and complete missions to stop the Goblin. As the Goblin, you cause destruction, fight S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, and try to ruin Spider-Man's day. The touch screen is used for special moves, like drawing a path for the Goblin's pumpkin bombs or tapping to dodge attacks. The levels are linear but encourage some exploration for collectibles. The pacing is quick, and the difficulty can spike in places, especially during boss fights. It feels a little cramped compared to the console versions, but it's satisfying to pull off combos and web-sling on the go.
