Spore Creatures came out on the Nintendo DS in 2008, developed by Maxis. It was part of that wave of DS games that really tried to use the touch screen for something more than just menus, letting you get hands on with building your own weird little alien from scratch.

You control a creature you design yourself, piecing together its body parts and assigning abilities, with the main goal of exploring a series of planets to find your lost spaceship. The gameplay involves screen by screen exploration, using your creature's specific parts to solve environmental puzzles, and engaging in simple real time combat with other creatures. The pacing is generally relaxed, though some combat encounters can be surprisingly difficult if your creature isn't well equipped. It feels like guiding a clumsy, homemade pet through a dangerous and curious world.
