Play Star Wars Empire Strikes Back Online

Dodging AT-AT fire in clunky snowspeeders, then suddenly dueling Vader with that iconic NES soundtrack blaring—it's janky, but the kind of jank that feels like 1988 in your hands.

Game Overview

I remember picking up Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back for the NES, released by Parker Brothers in 1992, not 1982. It was a time when movie tie-in games were a gamble; some were forgettable, but this one had a certain pull. The box art promised the Hoth battle, and that was enough to rent it for the weekend.

You control Luke Skywalker's snowspeeder, moving screen by screen across the frozen plains of Hoth. The main objective is to survive wave after wave of Imperial walkers, using your tow cable to trip them in a pattern that becomes almost rhythmic after a few tries. The game shifts to a first-person perspective for a brief lightsaber duel against Darth Vader, a stark change from the side-scrolling shooter sections. It is brutally difficult, with enemy fire coming from all directions and limited room for error. Playing it feels like wrestling with an old friend; the controls are stiff, but there is a real satisfaction in finally wrapping a cable around an AT-AT's legs.
