Game Overview

Street Fighter II’ Plus – Champion Edition on the Sega Genesis was the version that finally made me stop feeding quarters into arcade cabinets. Yeah, it’s missing some of the flashier animations from the arcade original, but who cares when you can finally play as the bosses? Vega’s claw slashes feel vicious, Bison’s psycho crusher actually makes sense here, and nothing beats the petty joy of picking the same character as your friend just to prove you’re better at mirror matches.

The speed boost takes some getting used to—Ryu’s fireballs come out faster, but so do everyone else’s, so good luck if you’re stuck playing against someone who mains Dhalsim. The controls are tight, though, and pulling off a perfect combo feels like snapping a puzzle piece into place. Just don’t blame the game when your little brother starts spamming Blanka’s electricity in the corner.

This is the version where couch rivalries were born, and honestly? They still hold up.
