Game Overview

Super Bonk came out for the Super Nintendo in 1994, developed by Hudson Soft. It was part of that wave of early 90s platformers that really leaned into weird, colorful ideas, back when developers weren't afraid to get a little strange. It definitely stood out, even on a system packed with memorable games.

You control Bonk, a small caveman with an oversized head, and your main goal is to rescue the kidnapped Princess Za by traveling through different time periods. The gameplay is built around headbutting enemies and collecting meat to power up, which lets you transform. You can shrink down to ant-size to access hidden areas, or grow into a massive, screen-filling dinosaur to smash through obstacles. The levels are nonlinear, encouraging exploration to find hidden doors and warp points. The pacing is fast and the difficulty can spike unexpectedly, but the sheer variety of transformations and settings keeps things interesting. It feels chaotic and inventive in a way that few other games from that time managed.
