Game Overview

Super Robot Spirits is one of those N64 fighting games that flew under the radar, but if you're into giant mechs duking it out, it's a total blast. You pick from seven iconic robots—like Voltes V or G Gundam—each with their own story path about saving Earth from some vague cosmic threat. The plot's not exactly deep, but hey, who plays a robot fighter for the narrative?

Fights feel weighty, like you're actually piloting these clunking metal beasts. You've got your basic punches and kicks, but the real fun comes from the special moves—button combos that unleash ridiculous laser beams or spinning pile-drivers. There's even a super meter for those "oh crap" moments when you need to nuke your opponent with one flashy finisher. Oh, and everyone can fly, which sounds cool until you realize mid-air combat is just as awkward as you'd expect from giant robots.

Besides the story mode, there's a decent mix of arcade-style options: survival runs, time attacks, and the usual versus mode for when you want to embarrass your friends. Unlocking the secret characters (including one exclusive to this game) gives it some replay value, though good luck figuring out the conditions without a guide. It's janky in that very '90s N64 way, but if you love Super Robot Wars or just want to watch mechs punch each other into scrap metal, it's worth a few rounds.
