Ever played those old-school RPGs where you spend half your time squinting at tiny sprites and the other half digging through menus? The Aethra Chronicles is exactly that—a 1994 MS-DOS gem that feels like someone mashed up Ultima and Bard’s Tale with a homemade Rolemaster rulebook. You start by rolling up a party of three (warrior, mage, thief—classic trio vibes), then get dumped into this low-res fantasy world where your dad’s been jailed by the king. Plot twist: the prince is missing too, so guess who’s gotta play detective?

What’s cool is how the camera zooms in depending on where you are—overworld’s this chunky map, towns get slightly more detail, and dungeons? Oh man, those pixel corridors feel claustrophobic in the best way. Combat flips to a side view, which was pretty slick for its time. You can hire extra mercs (up to six total), but good luck keeping them all alive when you stumble into a fight with a Red Dragon later. Yeah, there’s over 100 monsters, from rats you’ll stomp in two hits to things that’ll make you reload instantly.

It’s janky, it’s brutally old-school, and the fact one guy made most of it (shoutout to Michael Lawrence) is kinda wild. If you’ve got nostalgia for keyboard-controlled RPGs where you write down clues on actual paper, this’ll hit the spot.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
