Play The Black Cauldron Online

You play Taran smashing function keys to sneak, bargain, and rescue Hen Wen—choices twist the story in ways you wouldn’t expect from an ‘80s Disney game. That bridge puzzle still haunts me.

Game Overview

I first played The Black Cauldron back in the MS-DOS era, when Sierra On-Line was putting out some of their most memorable adventure titles. It was a 1986 release based on the Disney film, but it played more like a traditional text parser adventure than a typical movie tie-in. You controlled Taran, an assistant pig-keeper, and the goal was to rescue a prophetic pig named Hen Wen from the Horned King.

You guide Taran through a series of interconnected screens, typing commands to interact with objects and characters. The game emphasizes stealth and negotiation over combat; you often have to sneak past guards or bargain with NPCs to progress. Puzzles can be unforgiving, and the pacing is deliberate, requiring careful thought at every turn. It feels tense and immersive, especially when you realize one wrong move can lead to an abrupt, grim ending.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
