The FairyLand Story came out in arcades in 1985 from Taito. It was part of that wave of single-screen platformers that were everywhere before side-scrolling really took over. You play as a little wizard named Ptolemy, trying to reclaim your stolen spellbook from a dragon.

You move Ptolemy from screen to screen, clearing each area of enemies to proceed. Your main weapon is a magic spell that turns foes into cakes or other pastries. Once an enemy is transformed, you can kick the confection off a platform; if it lands on another enemy below, both are eliminated. This create-a-crusher mechanic is the heart of the game. The levels are short but demand quick thinking, and the difficulty ramps up steadily as you climb the castle. It feels clever and a little silly, turning a dungeon crawl into a bizarre baking contest.
