Game Overview

I first played The Four Crystals of Trazere back in the early 90s, a 1992 MS-DOS release from Mindscape. It was part of that wave of dungeon crawlers that really leaned into exploration and tactical combat, before everything shifted toward real-time action and fully rendered 3D. You got that classic top-down perspective, tiled movement, and a lot of secrets hidden in plain sight.

You control a party of four characters, each with distinct classes and abilities, navigating screen by screen through wilderness and dungeons. The goal is to recover the four crystals, which involves a lot of mapping by hand, managing spells with unusual combinations, and engaging in turn-based combat with a variety of monsters. The pacing is deliberate, almost methodical, and the difficulty can be punishing if you rush into encounters unprepared. It feels like a thoughtful, sometimes unforgiving puzzle dressed up as a fantasy adventure.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
