Game Overview

Strategic Simulations, Inc. released The Great War: 1914-1918 in 1993 as part of the MS-DOS Classic Games series. It was a turn-based strategy title that captured the grim, methodical nature of World War I, fitting right in with the detailed, thoughtful wargames of that era.

You command brigades and divisions, moving them across a hex-based map of Europe, managing supply lines and coordinating artillery barrages. The main goal is to achieve historical or alternate objectives by breaking through enemy trenches and holding key territories. Signature mechanics include detailed weather effects that bog down movement, and a command control system where units may not always follow orders if out of communication. The pacing is slow, deliberate, and unforgiving; mistakes cost dearly and recovery is difficult. Playing it feels like conducting a grueling, high-stakes chess match in the rain and mud.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
