I picked up The Legend of Zelda: New Awakening (v4.0) on a Game Boy Color emulator recently. It's a fan-made release, not an official Nintendo title, but it captures the feel of that era well. The graphics and sound are clearly built with the GBC's limitations in mind, using a limited palette and chiptune-style music that fits right in with late 90s handheld adventures.

You control Link, exploring an overworld and dungeons screen by screen, fighting enemies with your sword and shield. The main goal is to collect Triforce pieces by clearing dungeons, each with its own set of puzzles and bosses. Combat is straightforward but requires timing, especially against faster enemies, and the puzzles often involve pushing blocks, lighting torches, or finding hidden switches. The pacing is deliberate, with some challenging stretches that make you stop and think. It feels like rediscovering a familiar world with just enough surprises to keep it fresh.
