Game Overview

If you grew up in the '90s and had a thing for fast cars, you probably remember The Need for Speed on MS-DOS. This was the one that started it all—before the series went full Hollywood with cops and explosions. Here, it's just you, a handful of ridiculously cool sports cars (including some Japanese imports that felt exotic at the time), and twisty roads where you could actually feel the weight of the car shifting.

What blew me away back then was how real it tried to be. EA teamed up with Road & Track, so the cars handled like their real-life counterparts, right down to the gearshift sounds. There were even these little video clips of each car set to music, like a mini car commercial—totally unnecessary but weirdly charming. And the commentary? Some guy calmly explaining horsepower stats while you’re fishtailing into a guardrail.

It’s janky by today’s standards, obviously, but there’s something pure about it. No open world, no microtransactions—just you trying not to wreck a Ferrari Testarossa on a rainy mountain pass. Good luck with that CPU requirement, though; this thing demanded a beastly rig back in the day.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
