Game Overview

I picked up The Ren & Stimpy Show: Buckeroos! for the Super Nintendo back in 1993, a game published by THQ. It was a time when licensed platformers were everywhere, and this one tried to capture the show's chaotic energy on the SNES. You either controlled the wiry, frantic Chihuahua Ren or the blissfully oblivious cat Stimpy, each with their own slightly different feel, through a series of bizarre levels ripped straight from the cartoon.

You move screen by screen, jumping on platforms and attacking enemies by whacking them with Ren's newspaper or using Stimpy's belly bounce. The main goal is just to survive the madness and reach the end of each stage, though you also collect little golden "slogs" that act as the game's currency. The pacing is frantic, the platforming is often slippery and unpredictable, and some enemy placements feel downright mean. It feels like you're fighting the controls as much as the enemies on screen, which somehow fits the source material perfectly.
