Game Overview

I picked up The Ripping Friends: The World's Most Manly Men! for the Game Boy Advance back in 2002, a time when licensed games based on cartoons were everywhere. It was developed by Sennari Interactive and published by THQ, fitting right into that era of colorful, action-focused platformers. The game is based on the short-lived cartoon by John Kricfalusi, and it definitely carries that over-the-top, exaggerated style onto the small screen.

You control one of the four Ripping Friends, each with their own unique special move, as you punch and kick your way through side-scrolling levels. The main goal is to rescue kidnapped women from the villainous Clobberhunks, which involves navigating through enemy-filled stages, breaking objects for health, and finding keys to unlock doors. Signature mechanics include switching between the four heroes on the fly to use their specific abilities, like Rip's super punch or Chunk's ground pound, and collecting manliness icons to power up your attacks. The pacing is fast and the difficulty can spike unexpectedly, but pulling off a combo and hearing the characters shout their catchphrases makes it feel like a chaotic cartoon come to life.
