I picked up The Simpsons: Bart & the Beanstalk for Game Boy back in 1994, a time when licensed games were everywhere and you never quite knew what you were getting. Published by Acclaim Entertainment, it was one of those side-scrolling platformers that felt both familiar and a little strange, built around a goofy take on the Jack and the Beanstalk story with a Springfield twist.

You control Bart as he climbs the enormous beanstalk, screen by screen, avoiding falling anvils, angry bees, and other hazards tossed down by Mr. Burns from his castle above. Your main goal is simply to reach the top, but along the way you collect items like a slingshot for defense and temporary power-ups to help with tricky jumps. The controls can feel a bit stiff, especially when aiming the slingshot, and the pace is deliberate, more about careful timing than speed. It’s a straightforward, sometimes frustrating climb that captures the look of the show but plays like a lot of other platformers from that era.
