Game Overview

TMNT III: The Manhattan Project came out for the NES in 1991, developed and published by Konami. It was part of that wave of late-era NES games that really pushed what the system could do, with bigger sprites and more detailed backgrounds than a lot of earlier titles. You could tell they were getting ready for the next generation of consoles, but this one was still firmly an 8-bit experience.

You pick one of the four turtles to control, fighting through waves of Foot Soldiers and other mutants across New York and beyond. The goal is to stop Shredder, who has lifted Manhattan Island into the sky with a magnetic device. The game plays out screen by screen; you clear enemies to proceed, using each turtle's unique weapon. You can perform special attacks by pressing both buttons, and a second player can join in for simultaneous co-op. It moves at a fast pace and the difficulty ramps up quickly, especially during the boss fights. Playing it feels like a solid, slightly more polished version of the arcade brawler formula, translated well for the home console.
