Tomarc the Barbarian is one of those weird, ambitious Atari 2600 games where you juggle two characters at once—and somehow, it actually works. You’ve got Tomarc scrambling through caves, dodging rats and hunting for his magic sword, while poor Senta’s stuck in a cage fending off giant bats with magic blasts. The screen-switching mechanic feels clunky at first, but once you get the hang of flipping between them, it’s oddly satisfying to keep both alive.

Half the challenge is listening for audio cues—if you hear Senta’s magic firing nonstop, you’d better check on her before a bat gets too close. Meanwhile, Tomarc’s just trying not to fall into pits or get nibbled to death. It’s chaotic, but in that classic Atari way where you keep retrying just to see if you can do slightly better next time. The sword hunt adds this weird scavenger hunt layer to the whole thing.

Definitely not the easiest game to master, but there’s something charming about its janky two-hero gimmick. Just don’t expect either of them to move gracefully.
