Game Overview

Touhou Mario: Imperishable Night is a fan-made ROM hack for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, unofficially released around 2010. It was developed by an individual or group known as "S.N.N.", blending the platforming world of Super Mario World with the bullet-hell mechanics of the Touhou Project series. This kind of crossover experiment was not common on original SNES hardware, but it fits right in with the creative, homebrew spirit that emerged long after the console's commercial life.

You control Mario through familiar side-scrolling levels, but now enemy attacks fill the screen with intricate, colorful bullet patterns you must navigate. The main goal remains reaching the end of each stage, though survival depends just as much on precise movement as on jumping on enemies. Key mechanics include collecting power-ups that change your shot type, much like in a shoot 'em up, and facing boss enemies that use elaborate, multi-phase spell card attacks. The pacing is tense and methodical; you spend as much time watching bullet trajectories as running and jumping. It feels surprisingly cohesive, like two different genres decided to share a cartridge.
