Viewtiful Joe: Double Trouble! came out for the Nintendo DS in 2005, developed by Clover Studio. It was part of that early wave of DS games that really tried to make use of both screens and the touch interface, standing out among a lot of experimental titles at the time.
You control Joe, a superhero who has to rescue his girlfriend Silvia from another movie dimension. The game plays out across both screens, with action on the top and interactive touch elements on the bottom. You fight through side-scrolling stages, using Joe's VFX powers like Slow, which lets you dodge and counter in reduced time, and Mach Speed for rapid multi-hit attacks. Many puzzles require you to draw specific shapes on the touch screen to activate devices or defeat certain enemies. The pacing is fast, and the difficulty can spike sharply, especially during boss encounters. It feels like directing your own over-the-top action movie with every punch and special move.
