Viewtiful Joe - Double Trouble! is one of those DS games that makes you forget how tiny the screens are. You’re still playing as Joe, the wisecracking action-hero who slows down time, speeds it up, or zooms in for ridiculous over-the-top punches—but now you’ve got the touchscreen to juggle extra moves. At first, I kept fumbling the stylus while dodging attacks, but once it clicks, pulling off combos feels like directing your own cheesy action movie.
The bosses are as ridiculous as ever (one’s literally a giant, angry slot machine), and the puzzles actually make you think about how to use your VFX powers instead of just mashing buttons. The pixel art still pops, even on the DS, though some of the platforming can get frustrating when you’re trying to tap and jump at the same time. If you liked the original but wanted more ways to wreck enemies, this one’s a solid twist on the formula.
