Viewtiful Joe: Double Trouble! came out for the Nintendo DS in 2005, developed by Clover Studio. It was part of that early wave of DS games that really tried to use both screens and the touch controls in a meaningful way, not just as a gimmick. It's a side-scrolling beat 'em up that continues the style of the GameCube original but built specifically for the handheld.
You control Joe, a superhero who has to rescue his girlfriend Silvia from another dimension. The action is split across both screens; you fight enemies on the top screen while often using the touch screen on the bottom to solve environmental puzzles or activate special VFX powers like Slow, which lets you pummel foes in dramatic slow motion. You move from one contained screen to the next, clearing out enemies and navigating obstacles. The pacing is fast and the difficulty can be pretty unforgiving, demanding quick reflexes and smart use of your abilities. It feels like directing your own over-the-top action movie where every punch has weight.
