Viewtiful Joe - Double Trouble! is one of those DS games that makes you wish more beat-em-ups had this much style. You start off wrecking a movie set (classic Joe), then suddenly you're chasing thugs through this weird, comic-book-meets-Hollywood world. The side-scrolling action feels familiar if you've played the older games, but the VFX powers keep it fresh—like when you slow time to dodge attacks, and everything gets this cool film-grain effect.
My favorite move is Scratch, where you just violently shake the screen until enemies drop their weapons or straight-up pass out. The touchscreen controls actually work surprisingly well for splitting open walls or zooming in for dramatic punches. It's chaotic in the best way, like playing through an over-the-top action movie where the hero keeps breaking the fourth wall. The whole thing just oozes personality.
If you miss when beat-em-ups were loud, ridiculous, and didn't take themselves seriously, this is a great one to dig up.
