Vigilante came out for the Sega Master System in 1988, published by Sega. It was part of that wave of side-scrolling beat 'em ups that really defined the late 80s arcade and home console scene, offering a straightforward, action-focused experience without a lot of the complexity you started seeing in other games around that time.

You control a lone vigilante armed with a chain, moving from left to right through urban environments to rescue your kidnapped girlfriend from a cult. The main objective is to fight through endless waves of punk enemies, using your chain as a whip or a close-range flail; some enemies will grab you, forcing a button-mash struggle to break free. Boss fights require careful timing and pattern recognition, as they can easily drain your health if you just rush in. The pacing is relentless, and the difficulty can feel punishing with limited continues. It feels like a raw, repetitive brawl where survival depends on memorizing enemy movements.
