Game Overview

Virtua Fighter 2 on the Saturn is basically the closest you could get to the arcade at home back in '95—minus the sticky joysticks and that one guy who always hogged the machine. You’ve got the same roster from the first game, plus two new faces: Shun-di, this old drunk kung fu master who fights like he’s barely keeping his balance (but somehow wrecks you), and Lion, a guy with a lion mask who’s basically fighting for his life. Everyone’s got their own thing—Pai’s lightning-fast strikes, Jeffry’s brutal slams—and the moves feel weighty, like you’re actually trading blows.

The Saturn version runs at a smooth 60fps, though yeah, the textures took a hit compared to the arcade. Still, it’s impressive how well it holds up. You’ve got all the modes you’d expect—arcade, versus, team battles—but the coolest is Expert mode, where the AI actually learns your habits and starts countering you. Nothing like getting your own combos thrown back at you to keep things interesting.

Controls are simple (block, punch, kick), but the depth comes from timing and positioning. Some combos need quick button mashing, others require precise d-pad nudges—mess up, and you’ll eat a counterhit. And yeah, the physics are mostly realistic, except when someone suddenly leaps halfway across the ring like gravity’s just a suggestion. If you’ve got a Saturn and even a passing interest in fighters, this one’s a no-brainer.
