Play Virtua Fighter 2 Online
Sega somehow crammed Virtua Fighter 2’s 3D brawls into 16-bit sprites—still nail those same punishing combos, just with pixelated elbows to the face. Lau’s still got beef with his kid, Wolf still fights like a truck, and the backgrounds fake depth like magic.

Virtua Fighter 2 on the Genesis is one of those "how did they even pull this off?" ports. It takes Sega's flashy 3D arcade fighter and somehow squeezes it into a 2D format without losing the soul of the original. You still get all the drama—Akira trying to outdo Wolf, Lau facing off against his own daughter, Jacky’s messed-up family situation—just with pixel art instead of polygons.
The sprites are surprisingly detailed, and the backgrounds use this neat parallax trick to fake some depth. It’s not the arcade version, but it’s closer than you’d expect from a 16-bit console. The moves feel familiar too—same button combos, same weighty punches and kicks, just without the polygon crunch. Missing a few characters hurts, but the core eight fighters handle exactly how you remember.
Honestly, it’s impressive they got this running on a Genesis at all. You can tell they had to cut corners (no SVP chip means no fancy 3D), but what’s here still feels like Virtua Fighter—just with a chunky, nostalgic coat of paint. If you grew up with the arcade or Saturn version, it’s wild seeing it reinterpreted like this.
