Waku Waku 7 is a 2D fighting game from Sunsoft, released in arcades in 1996 and preserved in MAME 0.243. It arrived late in the arcade fighting game boom, a period crowded with more serious franchises, but it carved out its own space by being unapologetically strange and colorful.
You control one of seven oddball characters, like a transforming robot or a girl with a sentient yo-yo, and fight one-on-one to deplete the opponent's life bar. The main objective is to win rounds and progress through a series of matches. Signature mechanics include calling in a giant robotic helper for extra damage and a super move that fills the screen with wild, exaggerated animations. The pacing is fast, with big, easy-to-pull-off special moves that keep matches short and chaotic. It feels like playing inside a Saturday morning cartoon that refuses to take itself seriously.
