Game Overview

Wayne Gretzky Hockey came out in 1988 for MS-DOS, published by Bethesda Softworks. It was one of the early hockey games on PC, arriving at a time when sports simulations were still figuring out how to translate fast action onto limited hardware. You got a top-down view of the rink, with players represented by small, colorful sprites, and it captured the basic feel of hockey without much visual flair.

You control one player at a time, switching on the fly with a button press, and your main goal is to outscore the opponent. Passing and shooting are handled with simple keystrokes, but timing and positioning matter; a poorly aimed shot slides harmlessly wide. The game moves quickly, with constant back-and-forth play, and the difficulty comes from both the opposing AI and the somewhat slippery controls. It feels like a barebones but earnest attempt to put hockey on a computer screen, and scoring a goal delivers a genuine little thrill.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
