Game Overview

I first played Wing Commander on the Super Nintendo in 1992, a port of the PC space combat sim from Origin Systems. It was a different kind of game for the console at the time, trading platforming for a more serious, narrative driven flight experience. The hardware struggled a bit with the ambition, but it was impressive to see such a complex game running on a cartridge.

You control a rookie pilot thrown into a war against the feline Kilrathi. Your main objective is to survive tour after tour, completing missions like escorting freighters or assaulting enemy carriers. The core gameplay involves managing your fighter's energy between shields, weapons, and engines while dogfighting in fully 3D space. Between missions, you choose your next assignment from a briefing room, and these choices directly affect the story's progression. The pacing is deliberate, and the difficulty is punishing if you make a wrong move in combat. It feels like you are genuinely responsible for your own survival and the fate of your wingmen.
