Dodging missiles in a wobbly WWI biplane feels ridiculous until you pull off a tight turn and shred an enemy with machine guns. Then you hop in a modern jet and realize how much harder it is to not crash while lining up the perfect shot.
Wing War came out in the arcades in 1982 from Cinematronics. It was a two player game where you and a friend sat in separate cockpits, each with your own screen and flight controls. It felt like a step up from the usual single screen dogfighting games of the time, giving you a more personal, enclosed feeling of being a pilot.
You control a small fighter plane, and the main goal is to shoot down your opponent. The signature mechanics are the realistic flight controls, including a yoke for banking and turning, and the split screen setup that lets you hunt each other through a shared skybox. The pacing is fast and unforgiving; a single mistake can send you spiraling into the ground or leave you wide open for an attack. It feels like a genuine test of aerial reflexes and spatial awareness against another person.
