X-Men: Children of the Atom came out in 1994, developed and published by Capcom. It was one of the early arcade fighting games that ran on the CPS-2 hardware, and it arrived right when the genre was exploding with colorful, fast-paced titles. The game was later preserved in MAME 0.243, letting players experience it long after the arcade cabinets started to disappear.
You choose from a roster of X-Men characters and villains, each with their own special moves and super combos. The goal is to defeat your opponent in one-on-one battles across several rounds. Signature mechanics include air combos, hyper combos that consume a super meter, and assists from other characters during certain moves. The pacing is aggressive; matches move quickly, and the difficulty can spike sharply against some opponents. It feels responsive and flashy, especially when you land a lengthy combo that fills the screen with effects.
