Zaxxon came out in 1982 as part of the MS-DOS Classic Games collection, a port of the Sega arcade game. It was one of those early titles that tried to do something different with perspective on a home computer, back when most games were flat, top-down or side-scrolling affairs. The isometric view made it stand out immediately, even if the graphics were simple by today's standards.
You pilot a small spacecraft through a fortress, navigating a fixed path. The main objective is to survive the gauntlet, destroying enemy ships, turrets, and fuel tanks while carefully managing your altitude to avoid crashing into walls or the floor. The signature mechanics are the isometric perspective, which adds a layer of spatial challenge to aiming and navigation, and the constant fuel drain that pressures you to keep moving forward. It's a difficult game, demanding precise timing and spatial awareness, and it feels tense and methodical to play, where every small mistake can lead to a quick explosion.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
