Zen: Intergalactic Ninja on Game Boy is one of those weird, late-80s action-platformers where you play as a neon-colored space ninja fighting pollution-themed villains. Yeah, it’s as oddly specific as it sounds.
You’ve got four stages—oil, smog, dust, and dam—and you can tackle them in any order before the final showdown with Lord Contaminous (who, by the way, has the best villain name ever). Zen’s got a photon stick for whacking enemies, a slide move that feels way more useful than it should, and a jumping kick that’s oddly satisfying when you land it just right. There are power-ups too, like temporary invincibility or health boosts, but good luck finding them before some mutant sludge monster knocks you into a pit.
It’s simpler than the NES version, with shorter levels and less visual clutter, but that actually makes it a decent pick-up-and-play Game Boy title. Just don’t expect deep lore—Zen’s whole deal is basically “ninja fights eco-terrorism in space.” And honestly? That’s enough.
