Game Overview

I picked up Arcade Classic No. 1: Asteroids & Missile Command for the Game Boy back in 1995. It was a Nintendo release, one of those early attempts to bring the arcade experience onto a handheld. At the time, having two full arcade games on one cartridge felt like a pretty good deal, especially for long car rides or waiting around. It wasn't flashy, but it was reliable; a solid black cart with two classics that everyone kind of knew.

In Asteroids, you pilot a small triangular ship through a black field filled with drifting, geometric rocks. You shoot them to break them apart, avoid colliding with the fragments, and fend off occasional saucers that shoot back. Missile Command puts you in charge of defending six cities from an endless barrage of incoming missiles. You tap coordinates on a grid to launch counter-missiles, trying to intercept them before impact. Both games are brutally difficult, with the pace ramping up quickly and mistakes costing you dearly. It feels tense and immediate, a pure test of reflexes and spatial awareness that still holds up.
