Beast Wars for the Game Boy Color came out in 1999, published by Hasbro Interactive. It was one of those late-era GBC titles that tried to bring a little more complexity to the handheld, sitting alongside other action and strategy hybrids of the time. The game is based on the Transformers spin-off where characters shift between robot and animal forms, and it captures that core idea pretty directly.

You control a team of Maximals, moving them on a grid-based map across different missions. The main goal is usually to defeat all the Predacons on each stage, using a mix of ranged and melee attacks. The key mechanic is transformation; switching forms changes your movement range, attack type, and defenses, so you have to plan each turn carefully. Exploration is screen by screen, with some light environmental interaction, and the pacing is deliberate, almost tactical. It can be tough, especially when enemy formations force you to think several moves ahead. Playing it feels like a condensed, thoughtful battle every time.
