Play Blue Max - Aces of the Great War Online

You're Max in a WWI biplane—dodging flak, lining up shaky shots, and praying you've got enough fuel to make it home after bombing a bridge. That diagonal flying angle feels janky at first, then suddenly makes perfect sense.

Game Overview

Blue Max: Aces of the Great War came out in 1990 for MS-DOS, developed by Simis. It was one of those early flight sims that didn't try to be hyper realistic, but instead focused on giving you a specific kind of dogfighting action from a fixed perspective. It fit right in with other games of that era that prioritized straightforward, challenging gameplay over flashy graphics.

You pilot a World War I biplane, viewed from a distinctive isometric angle. Your main objective is to complete missions like bombing enemy targets or engaging in dogfights, all while managing your limited fuel and ammunition. The signature mechanics involve precise aiming with a wobbly crosshair to lead your shots against other planes, and carefully navigating through ground-based anti-aircraft fire. The pacing is tense and deliberate, as a single mistake can end your sortie early. It feels like a careful, tactical dance in the sky where every bullet counts.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
