Game Overview

I picked up Bomberman GB on the Game Boy back in 1998, a time when handheld games were all about quick sessions and straightforward fun. Hudson Soft put it out, and it was one of those titles that felt right at home on the system, offering a portable version of the classic maze action without much fuss. It didn't try to reinvent the wheel, just gave you exactly what you expected from a Bomberman game, which was more than enough.

You control the round little bomber himself, navigating single screen arenas, placing bombs to blast through soft blocks and take out an assortment of oddball enemies. Your main goal is simply to clear each stage of all foes to proceed, but it's the little things that define it: the tense wait for a bomb to explode as you trap an enemy, the scramble to collect power-ups like increased blast radius or extra bombs before they get snatched away, and the occasional tricky boss that demands careful timing. The pacing is brisk, and some later stages get genuinely tough with limited space to maneuver. It feels satisfying to methodically clear a path and outsmart the screen's inhabitants, one explosion at a time.
