Game Overview

Brutal: Paws of Fury came out on the Super Nintendo in 1994, published by GameTek. It was part of that wave of fighting games trying to grab some attention after Street Fighter II, but it went for a much weirder, animal-based cast instead of the usual martial artists. You don't see many games where the roster is built entirely out of anthropomorphic animals throwing special moves at each other.

You pick an animal fighter, like a kangaroo or a tiger, and battle through a series of one-on-one fights. The main goal is to win the tournament by depleting your opponent's health bar within a time limit, using a mix of standard punches and kicks alongside unique special moves. Signature mechanics include performing exaggerated, often comical special attacks (like a flaming uppercut) and a taunt system where mocking your opponent can actually recover a small amount of your own health. The pacing is fast, and the difficulty can spike sharply against certain opponents, demanding quick reflexes to block and counter. It feels chaotic and a little unrefined, but the sheer absurdity of a llama summoning lightning makes it a memorable, if janky, experience.
