Play Budokan: The Martial Spirit Online

Pick your weapon, step into the dojo, and trade slow, brutal blows where every block and strike matters—this ain’t your flashy arcade fighter. The AI will wreck you until you learn its rhythm.

Game Overview

Budokan: The Martial Spirit is one of those old-school martial arts games that actually tried to feel like the real thing—no fireballs or ridiculous combos here. You step into a dojo where you pick between karate, nunchaku, bo staff, or kendo, and the fights are slow, deliberate, almost like a chess match. Mess up your timing, and you’ll eat a wooden staff to the face.

The pixel art holds up surprisingly well, especially if you’re playing on VGA (though good luck finding an AdLib sound card these days). Rob Hubbard’s soundtrack is killer, all tense and atmospheric—way better than it had any right to be for a 1989 fighting game. My only gripe? The controls take some getting used to, and the AI doesn’t pull punches. You’ll lose a lot before it clicks.

If you’re into retro fighters that actually make you think, this one’s a hidden gem. Just don’t expect flashy moves—it’s all about patience and reading your opponent.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
