Lu Bu’s halberd carves through pixelated hordes like butter—just mash A and watch those tiny soldiers burst into 8-bit fireworks. Sun Ce’s speed turns the chaos into a blur, while the beepy soundtrack somehow makes it all feel epic.

Game Overview

Dynasty Warriors Advance 5 was a Game Boy Color release, though it never actually saw a commercial launch. It was developed by Omega Force and published by Koei, arriving late in the handheld's life when many players were already moving to newer systems. The game attempted to translate the large scale battles of the console Dynasty Warriors titles onto the limited hardware, a notable challenge for its time.

You control one of several warriors from the Three Kingdoms period, leading charges against enemy forces across a series of map-based battlefields. The main objective is to defeat enemy officers and capture bases to turn the tide of each conflict. Signature mechanics include using a single attack button to perform combos against waves of soldiers, activating a powerful Musou attack when your gauge is full, and occasionally issuing simple commands to allied troops. The pacing is fast and repetitive, with difficulty stemming more from enemy officer duels than the common soldiers. It feels like a condensed, slightly clunky interpretation of its bigger siblings, but there's a simple joy in plowing through hundreds of foes with just a few buttons.
