You spend a lot of time backtracking once you get new abilities, like double jumps or sliding under gaps, and it never gets old finding a secret you missed earlier.

The soul system is what makes it stand out. Every enemy has a chance to drop their ability when you kill them, so you end up grinding a bit just to see what weird powers you can collect. Some are useless, others completely change how you play. I remember getting this floating skull soul early on that let me shoot fireballs, and suddenly the whole game opened up.

It's not perfect—some of the platforming can be frustrating, and the translation is a little rough in spots. But the atmosphere, the music, the way the castle slowly makes sense as you explore... Castlevania - Aria Of Sorrow (Eurasia) nails that classic Metroidvania feel.
