Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin is one of those DS gems where you get to play as two characters at once—Jonathan, a whip-wielding vampire hunter, and Charlotte, a bookish witch who slings spells. The twist? You can switch between them on the fly, which keeps combat fresh since they handle totally differently. Jonathan’s all about cracking skulls with his whip, while Charlotte’s magic lets her do everything from blasting enemies to turning into a freaking cat.

The gimmick here is that the castle’s packed with magical paintings—step into one, and suddenly you’re in an Egyptian desert or a creepy carnival. It’s a neat way to break up the usual gothic halls. There’s also this ghost, Wind, who pops up with random fetch quests (kill X monster, find Y item), which sounds tedious but actually gives you a reason to backtrack when you’ve powered up.

Oh, and the co-op mode is a riot if you’ve got a friend nearby—you can team up to plow through challenge rooms together. Just don’t expect it to be balanced; some of those later stages are brutal. The whole thing’s got that classic Castlevania vibe but with enough new tricks to feel different. If you’ve ever wanted to suplex a skeleton while your buddy rains fireballs, this is your game.
