You control Simon Belmont, a vampire hunter whose main goal is to fight through Dracula's castle and defeat him. You move screen by screen through the castle, using your primary weapon, the Vampire Killer whip, to attack enemies like zombies, bats, and knights. You collect secondary weapons, such as throwing axes or holy water, which consume hearts found from candles you break. The game is known for its deliberate, sometimes stiff controls and high difficulty, demanding precise jumps and pattern memorization. It feels like a tense, methodical climb against a castle that actively resists your progress.
