Konami released Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance for the Game Boy Advance in 2002, a time when handhelds were really coming into their own with deeper, console-like adventures. It was part of that early 2000s wave of Castlevania titles that built on the exploration-heavy style Symphony of the Night popularized, giving players another big, interconnected castle to get lost in.

You control Juste Belmont, whip in hand, tasked with finding your missing friend and unraveling the mystery behind a twin castle. Movement is screen by screen; you backtrack often, using new abilities like high jumps or dashes to access previously blocked areas. Combat blends traditional subweapons, axes, holy water, crosses, with equippable spellbooks that modify their effects, letting you, say, throw a spread of fiery axes or create a circling barrier of sacred text. The pacing is deliberate, with some frustrating stretches due to the castle's similar-looking halls, but the flow of gaining power and mapping the space is satisfying. It feels like steadily mastering a haunted, shifting labyrinth.
