I picked up Challenge of the Dragon for the NES back in 1990, one of those games from Color Dreams that you'd find tucked away on a rental shelf. It came out during that era when every other game seemed to be a side-scrolling action platformer, and this one fit right in without making a lot of noise.

You control a martial artist armed with a sword, moving screen by screen through ten levels of enemy-filled terrain. Your main goal is straightforward: rescue your kidnapped love from a dragon. Combat relies on slashing with your sword and using flying kicks to hit airborne foes; you can also collect potions to restore health. The pacing is methodical, and the difficulty is unapologetic, demanding precise jumps and careful enemy management. It feels like a genuine test of patience and reflexes, especially when you finally beat a tough section after several attempts.
