Champion Wrestler came out in 1989 as an arcade game from Taito Corporation. It was part of that wave of wrestling games that tried to capture the spectacle of the sport with big, colorful sprites and simple controls. You would see it in arcades next to other competitive games, a loud and physical experience meant to draw a crowd.

You pick one of eight international wrestlers and fight your way through a tournament bracket. The main goal is to win each match, either by pinfall or by throwing your opponent out of the ring three times. The controls are built around a joystick and two buttons for punches and grapples; timing a grapple right lets you initiate a variety of slams and suplexes. The game moves quickly, and the AI can be brutally cheap, often reversing your moves with little warning. It feels like a frantic scramble, a test of reflexes more than strategy, especially when you finally land a big move and hear the crowd roar.
