Bomberman Max: Blue Champion came out for the Game Boy Color in 2000, developed by Hudson Soft. Two key mechanics set it apart: you collect and raise Charabombs, creature-like companions that follow you and offer special abilities, and you can link with the Red version to trade or battle them.
