Crossed Swords is this weirdly cool Neo Geo gem where you play as a knight slashing through monsters in this pseudo first-person view—your character’s just an outline, so you see enemies lunging at you from the shadows. At first, the combat feels a little stiff, but once you get the rhythm of blocking high or low before countering, it clicks. Mess up your timing, though, and you’ll eat a sword to the face.

Between chapters, you’re dumping all the gold you scavenged from corpses into new gear at a shop. There’s something satisfying about finally affording that fancy broadsword after barely surviving a bandit ambush. And the branching paths mean you can skip straight to Chapter 3 if you’re feeling bold (or just impatient).

It’s not the deepest RPG, but the combat has weight to it—every swing and block matters. Just don’t go button-mashing unless you enjoy game over screens.
