I picked up Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon for the Game Boy Advance back in 2003, a time when licensed games were a real mixed bag. Developed by A2M, it was one of those attempts to bring a cinematic wuxia experience to a handheld, a platform better known for platformers and RPGs than fluid martial arts. It stood out simply for trying something different, even if it didn't always hit the mark.

You control Jen Yu, and the goal is to recover the stolen Green Destiny sword. The gameplay is a side-scrolling action brawler where you move screen by screen, clearing out groups of enemies before progressing. Your main tools are a sword for close combat and a bow for picking off distant foes; the ability to run along walls and perform aerial attacks adds a layer of verticality to the fights. The pacing is deliberate, often slowing for exploration, but the difficulty can spike unexpectedly during boss encounters. It feels like a solid, if sometimes clunky, effort to translate the film's graceful combat into a playable form.
